Understanding network performance metrics aids in optimizing resource allocation. By pinpointing areas of congestion or underutilization, IT teams can make informed decisions about network upgrades or reconfigurations. Interpreting network performance metrics involves understanding key indicators such as throughput, latency, jitter, and packet loss. Throughput measures the rate at which data is successfully transferred from one point to another, often in bits per second (bps). Higher throughput indicates a more efficient network. Latency, the time it takes for data to travel from source to destination, is crucial for applications requiring real-time communication; lower latency is generally better. Jitter, the variation in latency over time, can impact the quality of audio and video transmissions. Consistent jitter values are preferable. Packet loss, the percentage of packets that never reach their destination can severely affect performance, particularly for streaming and online gaming.

How to Measure Network Performance (+ Tools That Help)

Measuring network performance is crucial for maintaining efficient and reliable IT infrastructure. Several key metrics and tools are used to evaluate various aspects of network performance. 

Here, we will discuss some of the most important methods to measure network performance and tools that can help.

Measuring Network Throughput

Network throughput measures how much data is successfully transferred from one point to another in a given time frame. It is often lower than the maximum bandwidth due to various factors like network congestion and protocol overhead. It's a critical metric for gauging network performance. 

Tools like SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM) and NetStress can measure throughput. SolarWinds NPM provides real-time monitoring and historical data analysis, whereas NetStress is a simple tool designed to measure network throughput between two endpoints.

Consistently measuring your network's throughput allows network administrators to gain a comprehensive understanding of their network's performance, identify issues, and implement necessary improvements to ensure optimal operation.

Latency Assessment Techniques

Latency indicates the time it takes for data to travel from the source to the destination. High latency can result in noticeable delays, affecting user experience. Measuring it accurately is crucial for understanding network performance. 

Common techniques include using tools like Ping and Traceroute. Ping sends ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) echo request packets to a target host and measures the time it takes to receive a response. Traceroute, on the other hand, tracks the path that a packet takes to reach its target, helping identify where delays occur. 

Another method is employing network performance monitoring software. These tools provide real-time data and historical analysis on latency metrics. Solutions like SolarWinds or PRTG Network Monitor offer detailed insights and alerts for high latency. 

Synthetic monitoring is another technique, which involves simulating user interactions to gauge performance from various locations. This helps in identifying latency issues that might affect user experience.

Packet Loss Evaluation

When data packets traveling across your network fail to reach their destination, that's packet loss. This can seriously impact the quality of your network services, from slow loading web pages to choppy voice calls.

Tools like Wireshark and NetFlow can be used to measure packet loss. Wireshark is a network protocol analyzer that captures and displays packet data, allowing for detailed inspection. NetFlow, developed by Cisco, provides flow-based traffic monitoring, helping to identify packet loss and its sources.

Ping tests allow you to send packets to a target address and measure how many are lost. A simple command like ping -c 100 example.com can give you a basic idea of packet loss percentage. 

Understanding packet loss and keeping it to a minimum is crucial for maintaining a reliable and efficient network. A high rate of packet loss often indicates issues such as network congestion, faulty hardware, or poor signal strength in wireless networks. Regular monitoring helps in early detection and troubleshooting, ensuring smooth network operations.

Jitter Analysis

Jitter refers to the variation in the time between packets arriving, caused by network congestion, timing drift, or route changes. It's crucial for real-time communications like VoIP and video conferencing. High jitter can lead to poor quality calls and video streams. 

Tools like Jitterbug and PRTG Network Monitor can measure jitter. Jitterbug is designed specifically for measuring jitter in VoIP networks, while PRTG Network Monitor offers a comprehensive network monitoring solution that includes jitter measurement.

These tools will help you track the time it takes for packets to travel from the source to the destination. By analyzing the differences in these times, you can identify jitter levels. Consistent timing means low jitter; fluctuating times indicate high jitter. Regular monitoring helps you spot issues before they affect your network's performance.

For immediate troubleshooting, diagnosing scenarios where issues can be replicated or even experiments in chaos-engineering, real-time monitoring is ideal. On the other hand, Historical data analysis is ideal for long-term performance optimization and cost-saving strategies, for example in situations like managing clusters where you can use past trends to scale up or down the size of your pool of VMs. This helps optimize resources and reduce costs based on predictive patterns.

Bandwidth Utilization

Bandwidth measures the maximum rate data can be transferred over a network connection. It is usually expressed in megabits per second (Mbps) or gigabits per second (Gbps). Keeping an eye on this metric helps identify if your network is under heavy load, which can lead to slowdowns and other performance issues.

To measure bandwidth utilization, network monitoring tools can provide real-time data on how much of your available bandwidth is being used at any given moment. By analyzing this data, you can spot trends and anomalies—like sudden spikes in bandwidth usage—that might indicate a problem. 

Regularly assessing bandwidth utilization helps ensure your network runs efficiently and can handle peak traffic periods without degrading performance.

Conducting Speed Tests

Conducting speed tests is a fundamental method for measuring network performance. These tests assess the speed at which data is transferred between your device and the internet. Typically, a speed test measures three key metrics: download speed, upload speed, and latency. Download speed indicates how fast data is received from the internet, while upload speed shows how quickly data is sent. (Latency, or ping, measures the time it takes for a data packet to travel from your device to a server and back.)

To perform a speed test, you can use various online tools and applications such as Ookla's Speedtest, Fast.com, or Google's Internet Speed Test. These tools provide a quick and easy way to measure network performance by connecting to the nearest server and running a series of tests. It is advisable to conduct multiple tests at different times of the day to get a comprehensive understanding of your network's performance, as speed can vary based on network congestion and other factors.

Challenges in Measuring Network Performance

Measuring network performance comes with its own set of challenges, particularly in today’s complex, hybrid IT environments. One of the biggest hurdles is obtaining accurate, real-time visibility across the entire network. With many organizations operating across multiple locations, using cloud services, and integrating remote workforces, it's difficult to monitor performance consistently. Network blind spots can emerge, especially when dealing with third-party services or multi-cloud environments where control is limited. This makes identifying the root cause of performance issues a tricky and time-consuming process.

Monitoring portions of a network that we don’t have 100% control over can be challenging. For example, some of our products use MNOs (cellular networks) to connect to our platform, and these networks inevitably have some service interruptions in some areas. We are limited in how much we can see “under the hood” in these external networks. We approach this challenge by monitoring end-device communication rates versus expected network load to identify any gaps in expected messaging. This approach often enables us to learn about network interruptions and to alert our customers even before outage bulletins are published publicly by the MNOs. This has helped us build tremendous trust with our customers.

HTTP/HTTPS protocols add another layer of overhead due to their stateless nature and the encryption processes involved in HTTPS, impacting the speed and performance of web applications.
